International Center for Journalists (ICFJ) Foundational Learning Journalism Initiative: Reporting on Literacy and Numeracy in Kenya, Senegal and South Africa 2026

📝 About the Initiative

An estimated 9 out of 10 children in sub-Saharan Africa cannot read for meaning or do simple math by age 10. While evidence exists on what works to improve learning outcomes, and political will is growing, not enough countries are implementing reforms at scale.

This initiative aims to leverage African journalism to embed this critical issue into public consciousness. The International Center for Journalists (ICFJ) is seeking journalists and content creators in Kenya, Senegal, and South Africa to join a program that equips them with the knowledge, skills, and networks to produce data-driven, solutions-oriented reporting on foundational literacy and numeracy.

Selected fellows will receive:

• Reporting grants.
• Individual mentorship.
• Story production support over a 6-month period.
• Study tour opportunities.
• Training on education data and pedagogy.

Up to 15 fellows will be selected for this program.

✅ Eligibility Criteria

Applicants must meet the following requirements:

• Be journalists working for a news outlet, freelancers, content creators, or social media influencers based in Kenya, Senegal, or South Africa.
• Strong candidates will demonstrate:
  • Experience covering education, social policy, or development (preferred but not required).
  • A clear understanding of what is missing in current coverage of foundational learning in their country.
  • A commitment to reaching policymakers, educators, and affected communities—not just publishing stories.
